The Halloween that never was...

One Halloween when I was, I think, in junior high, my brother, sisters & I were talking nonstop about Halloween. If I remember right, our Halloween obsession that year began around late August or early September. Well, my parents got sick of it. They felt like Halloween was starting to trump Christmas in excitement level, and that just wouldn’t do. So, they said that if they heard one more peep about Halloween, costumes, or anything else related to said holiday, they wouldn’t let us celebrate Halloween. Well, kids will be kids, and of course we talked about Halloween some more, so my parents actually banned us from celebrating Halloween that year!

We had to stay home on Halloween night, while my parents went to the temple (yes, the temple is open on Halloween, for all of you inquiring minds who wanted to know). They didn't even buy candy for us to pass out, so we had to give apples to all the poor kids who came to our house!! We lived in a very tight-knit neighborhood, so not only was it lame to miss Halloween, but it was also embarrassing to be “the kids in that family whose parents grounded them from trick-or-treating”. Oh, man…

P.S. When I talked to my Mom about this, she said that we had started talking about Halloween about 6 months early. That's not how I remember it...

  1. Wow. I think it's remarkable that you turned into a responsible adult. ;) I mean, you could have rebelled and worn monster costumes for the other 364 days of the year. Then your mom would have been the one embarrassed to be THAT family.

  3. That's so freaking awesome.

Oh, temple is open except Dallas, it's closed for maintenance until some time in November.

  4. While I would have been devestated, I do have to give your parents props for following through. I wouldn't be strong enough.
